the inccubator

overview

The Inccubator is a Multicultural Media and Social Networking Platform dedicated to providing Community, Content, Connectivity and Culture.

This project was created during an 3 week design sprint with 3 other designers to created an onboarding process for their current desktop website.

what’s the problem?

After the meeting with our client our team gained a firm understanding of the client’s needs.

  • the client needed a way to help new users integrate into a new platform that has a variety of features that may overwhelm when first joining.

  • implementation of a clear navigation, guidance, and hierarchy was needed to help users get to their desired destinations.

In this redesign, we began with introductory research to gain an understanding the client’s and the user’s needs for the new on-boarding process for the desktop website. Our team conducted various research methods that consisted of

  • heuristic evaluations

  • competitive analysis

  • surveys

  • interviews

From the research methods our team conducted, we found some aspects of the current design that needed to be changed.

After discussion and analyzing the data, we came to the conclusion that visual hierarchy, taxonomy, ontology, and it’s integration into an intuitive and user friendly on-boarding process should be our main priority.

research

Having established our priorities for the design we began our process with a design studio.

Here are some sketches that I was able to draw up during the design studio for the on-boarding process as well as additional key screens.

design process

In these sketches I drew flows that potential users would use in order to complete their desired tasks.

Originally, our client wanted to focus on the mobile version of the site and on-boarding process, however, he had a change of heart and wanted our design team to focus on the desktop version of the website as he had no designs for that medium yet.

From the sketches we created we wanted to create a tangible version of the design so we moved to creating wire-frames and prototypes.

Here are some of the screens of the first digital version

Our main goal for this design was to create an intuitive and user friendly on-boarding process to help gain and retain users for this new social media platform.

In order to accomplish this task we created a multi step on-boarding process in order to prevent information overload on one screen.

Having created these low fidelity wire-frames our team moved on to user interviews in order to see if users would intuitively get through the registration and on-boarding.

Here are some insights that we received

“The new on-boarding process is easy and very simple to follow!”

“I felt a little confused about the phone verification step.”

“Some of the new terminology is very difficult to follow.”

having received these insights we made changes and iterated on the designs - the final prototype is linked below

next steps

  • continue to conduct testing, user interviews, and reiterate the designs based on the results.

  • continue to ideate, improve, and test based on user feedback.

From this project I learned about communication, research, and teamwork. I was able to learn the proper prep work and communication with the client and within the design team can make a big difference in the design.

In this design sprint I was able experience first hand the value of a team and the support you receive from being a part of one. One example I can give that occurred many times during the design sprint is when one of the designers was struggling some aspect of the design process all of us were able to come together and tackle the problem together.

This really helped up us get through tough design decisions and come up with the design that we did.
