50 States Half Marathon Club

overview

50 states half marathon club is a running community dedicated to providing a community and a variety of challenges for runners.

This project was created during an 3 week design sprint requested by the client with the goal of creating a form builder landing page as well as a wireframe of a form creation page.

What’s The Problem?

  • client needed a design to help integrate multiple communities into one while providing resources and knowledge.

  • there is a need for navigation, platform, and communication methods.

In this design, we wanted to start with our research. In order to gain an understanding of our client, users, and the current state of the website we conducted various research methods which consisted of

  • heuristic evaluations

  • competitive analysis

  • surveys

From these research methods, our team found various key aspects were missing in our clients website. We realized that all of the successful competitors had clear and concise navigation, various types of content, connected community, and tools to contact other community members.

The priorities that our team agreed to included minimizing external links, improving visual hierarchy, improving ontology, and improving taxonomy.

Research

With a firm understanding of the users and our goals, we wanted to start our design process with a design studio.

Here are some sketches that I drew up during our design studio that I thought would be a great starting point.

In the sketches from the design studio, I created frames for the potential flows for our two types of users.

From this sketching session we were able to create an outline of what we wanted to create for the redesign and moved on to online iterations.

Here are some screens of the first digital version

Our initial goal for our first prototype was transfer the existing features and content on the site into the redesign based on a priority of importance to the user.

So to start off, we created a homepage and an additional two screens based on the user flows of the two personas. Using these screens we wanted to get of glimpse of what the users thought of the new redesign.

Here are some insights we received

“it’s hard to tell the difference between the main and subcategories in the hamburger menu.”

“some of the wording and selection when i try to filter for a group is very confusing.”

“the pay to sign up is really sudden. it catches me off guard and makes me uncomfortable.”

Design Process

  • Additional research and user interviews to help with the transition from external platforms into the new website redesign.

  • Make a compatible desktop site as some users prefer using desktop devices over mobile devices.

  • Continue to iterate and test on the design to find new or missed pain points from users.

What I Learned

From this project I learned the importance of a thorough research process and the insight that it provides when trying to understand a user base. This aspect allowed me to gain an appreciation for user research and empathy when trying to create the best possible solution for both the users and the client.
